Guide to Genealogy: Getting Started

Introduction to the study of Genealogy. The guide is geared toward researchers who are just getting started.

Overview

If you're new to genealogy, it can seem daunting to know where to get started. There are many kinds of records that can help you document your family, from marriage licenses and obituaries to wills and deeds. Understanding the historical context of these records, the privacy and access restrictions surrounding them, and knowing where to find them can often present a challenge. This LibGuide seeks to guide you to the primary resources to get started in your research.

Updates and Tips from NGS

Basic Terms

What is Genealogy?

Genealogy is a record or account of the ancestry and descent of a person, family, group etc. Other terms used to refer to genealogy are heritage, pedigree and family tree. The definitions of these terms overlap, but have some differences.

  • Genealogy and Ancestry involve the names and dates in our lineage. In other words, the hard facts of our family lines and pedigrees.
  •  Family history and heritage are more about the embellishments of our history: the stories, the tradition, the culture.

There is value in each aspect of research, but the ultimate goals of your research will determine what types of sources you consult and how thoroughly you examine the history and context of the records you find.

As you work through your research, you are likely to encounter more uncertain terms. You can consult this glossary at https://www.genealogy.com/articles/research/glossary.html.

Pedigree Chart

It's best to get organized at the start of your research so you can keep track of the information you find and avoid the need to repeat your research. Check out the free family trees and pedigree charts from the sites below if you want to keep paper copies of your records.
